Home Solar Kit FAQ
A home solar kit is a complete package of solar equipment designed to help your home generate clean electricity. Kits are sized in kilowatts (kW) and include solar panels, microinverters, roof mounting hardware, and key electrical components selected to work together safely.
We currently offer the following residential kit sizes:
- 5 kW — lower energy homes*
- 7 kW — average energy homes*
- 12 kW — higher energy homes*
- 19 kW — very high energy use homes*
*Based on average residential electricity usage in Canada. Actual needs vary by household.
Kit size depends on your electricity usage, roof space, and electrical panel capacity. As a general guideline:
- 5 kW: bills under ~$100/month
- 7 kW: bills around $100–$150/month
- 12 kW: bills $150–$200+/month or high-draw appliances
- 19 kW: very high usage, EVs, heat pumps, workshops, or large homes
These are general estimates. For a precise recommendation, consult a licensed electrician or request a custom system design.
Each kit is designed to maximize common residential electrical service limits:
- 5 kW: 100A panel / 100A busbar with 1×20A breaker
- 7 kW: 200A panel / 200A busbar with 1×30A breaker
- 12 kW: 200A panel / 200A busbar with 1×30A + 1×20A breakers
- 19 kW: 200A panel / 225A busbar with 2×30A + 1×20A breakers
Final electrical design and approval must be completed by a licensed electrician in accordance with local code.
These kits follow NEP’s design guideline of maximum 7 microinverters per AC string:
- 5 kW: 1 string of 5 microinverters
- 7 kW: 1 string of 7 microinverters
- 12 kW: 2 strings — 7 on a 30A circuit and 5 on a 20A circuit (7 + 5)
- 19 kW: 3 strings — 7 + 7 on 30A circuits and 5 on a 20A circuit (7 + 7 + 5)
Each kit includes the major components required for a residential solar installation:
- JA Solar 500W panels
- NEP BDM-800 WiFi microinverters
- SunModo mounting system (asphalt roof)
- SolaDeck roof penetration boxes (asphalt roof kits)
- AC combiner, breakers, trunk cable, and accessories
- NEP installation tools

Kits are available for:
- Asphalt shingle roofs: includes SolaDeck and SunModo NanoMount hardware
- Standing seam metal roofs: SolaDeck removed; NanoMount replaced with S-5! clamps
For metal roofs that are not standard standing seam, we may request photos to customize the mounting solution.
Lightning/surge protection and grid-tie signage are offered as optional add-ons. These items are recommended in some cases but are not required for every installation.
Custom signage requires site-specific information and may be delivered separately from the main kit.
These kits are designed to be DIY-friendly, but final electrical connections, inspections, and utility approvals must be completed by a licensed electrician or qualified installer.
These kits are based on general residential design assumptions. Final system design, electrical compliance, permitting, and installation must be reviewed and approved by a licensed electrician or installer. Custom system design and consulting services are available.
