Lead Acid vs. Lithium-Ion

While lead-acid batteries are ideal for vehicle ignition, lithium-ion batteries are the top choice for RVers needing versatile energy storage. Lithium-ion batteries efficiently power a wide range of amenities—from keeping food fresh to supporting work on the road—making them an indispensable part of modern RV travel.

Advantages of Lead-Acid Batteries

Lead-acid batteries have the advantage of being well-established and reliable. They are generally less expensive upfront, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers. Additionally, they are widely available, ensuring that you can easily find a replacement while on the road.

Drawbacks of Lead-Acid Batteries

However, lead-acid batteries tend to be heavier and bulkier, which can be a concern in an RV where space is limited. They also require more frequent maintenance, such as topping off with distilled water, and have a lower energy density compared to lithium-ion batteries.

Advantages of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are lighter and more compact, allowing you to make better use of the limited space in an RV. They also have a higher energy density, enabling them to store more power without increasing their size. Plus, they generally require little to no maintenance.

Drawbacks of Lithium-Ion Batteries

The main drawback of lithium-ion batteries is their higher upfront cost. However, this can often be offset by their longer lifespan and greater energy efficiency, especially for RVers who spend a lot of time on the road.

Weight: ≈ 80.8 lb (36.7 kg)

The BBGC3iH includes an integrated heater that allows safe charging in sub-freezing conditions. When the heat-enable terminal is switched on, heating engages automatically around ~1.7 °C (35 °F). Power draw is ~28 W while heating.

Temps: Charge (heat-enabled) down to ~−4 °C/25 °F; Discharge −20 °C to +57 °C (−4 °F to 135 °F).

Nominal Voltage: 12.8 V  |  Capacity: 270 Ah (≈ 3.46 kWh)

Charge: Absorption 14.2–14.6 V • Float 13.4–13.8 V • Recommended/Max charge current ≤ 135 A (0.5C)

Discharge: 300 A continuous • 500 A for 30 s • > 500 A for 0.5 s surge

Yes. Wire in series up to 48 V (4 batteries) and unlimited in parallel. For heated systems, link the heat-enable leads (or use a single switch) so all batteries heat evenly. Ensure batteries have similar state of charge and temperature before linking.

Yes. The iH model includes a Smart BMS (cell balancing, over/under-voltage, over-current, short-circuit, high/low temp cutoffs) and Dragonfly IntelLigence® communications for Bluetooth® monitoring and a wireless mesh network.

Use the Battle Born App (iOS) for SoC, voltage, temperature, history, and alerts (updates ~every 5 s). A Battle Born Hub is required for multi-battery and advanced features (e.g., RV-C/NMEA 2000 integration).

Cycle Life: 3,000–5,000 deep cycles (80–100% DoD)
Warranty: 10-Year Limited Warranty (Battle Born / Dragonfly Energy)

Designed and assembled in the USA (Reno, Nevada) with UL-listed cylindrical LiFePO₄ cells and IP65, C1D2-rated pack design.

Off-grid solar systems, RVs & motorhomes, marine/boating, cabins, trailers, and mobile/industrial power. The heated design is ideal for cold Canadian environments.
