FAQ Icon RV Engine Charging Kit FAQ

This is a DC-DC battery charging kit that charges your RV's house battery bank directly from your vehicle's alternator while you drive. The kit is built around a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger, with fuses, fuse holders, and battery cable included for a complete engine-to-house charging connection.

The DC-DC charger connects between your vehicle's starter battery (or alternator circuit) and your house battery bank. While the engine is running, it converts and regulates power from the alternator to safely charge your house batteries, isolating the two battery systems so your starter battery is never drawn down.

This kit uses a Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC battery charger, which:

  • Delivers up to 50A of charging current
  • Supports lithium and lead-acid battery charge profiles
  • Includes Bluetooth monitoring via the Victron app
  • Provides automatic engine-running detection to start/stop charging

This kit is typically best suited for:

  • RVs, vans, and trailers with a house battery bank separate from the starter battery
  • Owners who drive frequently and want their house batteries charged automatically along the way
  • 12V systems pairing engine charging with solar or shore power charging
  • Lithium or AGM house battery banks needing a regulated charge source

This kit includes:

  • 1 × Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC battery charger
  • 2 × Victron MIDI-fuses, 60A/32V
  • 2 × Victron MIDI-fuse holders
  • 12 ft × 4 AWG tinned battery cable, red, 1/4" lug to bare end
  • 3 ft × 4 AWG tinned battery cable, red, 1/4" lug to 5/16" lug
  • 15 ft × 4 AWG tinned battery cable, black, 5/16" lug to 5/16" lug

See the System Components section for complete quantities and specifications.

A 60A/32V MIDI-fuse and holder is included for both the starter battery side and the house battery side of the run. Fusing both connections close to each battery protects the wiring and both battery banks in the event of a short circuit.

The kit includes pre-terminated 4 AWG tinned battery cable sized for 50A DC-DC charging runs:

  • Red cable with 1/4" lug to bare end, for connecting to the charger's input terminal
  • Red cable with 1/4" lug to 5/16" lug, for shorter charger-to-fuse connections
  • Black cable with 5/16" lug to 5/16" lug, for ground/negative connections

All cable is tinned for corrosion resistance in marine and RV environments.

Yes, this kit is designed to be DIY-friendly for anyone comfortable with basic 12V wiring. Routing cable between the engine bay and house battery compartment, and confirming correct fuse placement, should be reviewed by a qualified RV technician or electrician if you're unsure.

Yes. Optional add-ons include:

  • Higher-amperage DC-DC chargers for larger battery banks
  • Additional battery cable for longer engine-to-house runs
  • Battery monitoring accessories
  • Combined solar + engine charging bundles

Final wiring, fuse sizing, and connection points should be reviewed against your vehicle and RV's electrical system and manufacturer guidelines. Consult a qualified installer or electrician if you're unsure about any step of the installation.
