Grants and Incentives for Renewable Energy in Alberta
Note: Alberta has no province-wide solar
rebate or tax credit. Incentives here are financing programs,
senior-specific loans, and individual municipal rebates —
availability depends on where you live.

A regularly updated directory of every active municipal,
provincial, and federal financial incentive for solar in
Alberta, maintained by the non-profit Solar Alberta.

availability varies significantly by municipality.

Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP):
CEIP is a financing initiative that allows property owners
in Alberta to fund energy-efficient upgrades, such as solar
panel installations, and repay the costs through their
property tax bills. Available in 20+ municipalities
including Calgary, Edmonton, Airdrie, Banff, and Lethbridge;
rebate stacking with other programs is generally allowed.

Banff Solar Incentive Program:
The Town of Banff offers a post-installation rebate to
property owners who install solar photovoltaic (PV)
systems. The rebate is based on the size of the system
installed, up to a maximum of 20 kW, and is available to
both residential and commercial property owners.

City of Medicine Hat – HAT Smart Existing Homes Incentive:
Rebates up to $5,000 per home for combined
eligible retrofits, including solar, under the Existing
Homes Program. A post-renovation EnerGuide Evaluation is
required; documentation must be submitted by
December 15, 2026.

City of St. Albert – CEIP Incentive:
A $1,400 cash incentive applied directly
to the Clean Energy Improvement Tax for completed CEIP
projects. One incentive per project, available on a
first-come, first-served basis while funding lasts.

City of Airdrie – CEIP Rebate Program:
Combined rebates up to $3,100, including
a $600 project rebate plus a $2,500 upgrade-combination
rebate for financed projects of $15,000 or more. Limited
to the first 250 applications.

City of Wetaskiwin – Solar Installation Grant Program:
Five $5,000 grants available to businesses
and not-for-profit applicants installing a minimum 5 kWh
solar panel system.

Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program (SHARP):
Low-interest home equity loans of up to
$40,000 for Albertans 65 and older to fund
home repairs and adaptations, including energy-efficiency
upgrades such as solar. Low-income seniors who don't
qualify for the loan may be eligible for a grant instead.

Update: The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan
are now closed to new applicants as of March 2026. Provincial
and municipal programs — like the Alberta options above —
are now the primary source of residential solar incentives.

Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (Commercial):
A 30% federal tax credit is available for eligible
commercial solar installations, helping businesses
offset the upfront cost of going solar.
